JOSHUA T. COTTON SETTLES INDIANA

EEL RIVER INDIANA TERRITORY

Brief Bio: Joshua T. Cotton, who was a captain in the War of 1812, moved to Jackson township about 1818.  He married Miss Williamson, and brought up a large family.  From Jackson he moved to Indiana, where he died.  Captain Cotton was a true specimen of the hardy pioneer as well as a good and brave soldier. Joshua Thomas Cotton moved to Indiana in 1820 and purchased 40 acres of land from the Federal Government in 1850 as follows:

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

To All to whom these present shall come, Greetings:  Where as, Joshua T. Cotton of Wells County, Indiana has deposited in the General Land office of the United States a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Fort Wayne whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Joshua T. Cotton according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820 entitled:  “An act making further provisions for the sale of Public lands”, for the North East quarter of the South West quarter of Section Thirteen, i  Township Twenty Eight North of Eleven East in the district of lands subject to sale at Fort Wayne, Indiana containing forty acres according to the official plat of the survey of the said lands returned to the General Land Office by the Surveyor General which said Tract has been purchased by said Joshua T. Cotton, now know ye, that the United States of America, in consideration of the premise and in conformity with the several Acts of Congress in such case made and provides, have given and grants and by these present do give and grant unto the said Joshua T. Cotton and t his heirs, the said Tract above described: to have and to hold the same, together with all the rights, privileges, amenities and appurtenances of whatsoever nature hereunto belong, unto the said Joshua T. Cotton and his heirs and assigns forever.

In witness whereof, Mr. Zachary Taylor, President of the United Stats of America, have caused these letters to be made patent and the seal of the General Land Office to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, the tenth day of April in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty and of the independence of the United Stats the Seventy Fourth.

On 18 Dec 1810 when Joshua Thomas was 25, he married Elizabeth A. Williamson2,3, daughter of Joseph Williamson & Margaret Williamson,  Austintown, Trumbull County, Ohio.9 Born on 17 Jul 1791 in Pennsylvania.3,10Elizabeth A. died in Wells County, Indiana, on 10 Sep 1876; she was 85.2

On 14 Mar 1833 when William W. was 21, he married Hanna Rinear in Trumbull County, Ohio. Born on 14 Feb 1815 in New Jersey. Hanna died in Jefferson Township, Wells County, Indiana, on 10 Nov 1896; she was 81.

Higley & Lydia Mary Conant, in Windham (Portgage), Preble County, Ohio. Born on 30 Sep 1834 in Windham (Portgage), Preble County, Ohio. Sarah died in Windham (Portgage), Preble County, Ohio, on 9 Dec 1853; she was 19.

On 5 Apr 1864 when John was 37, he second married Elizabeth J. Riddle, daughter of Joseph B. Riddle & Traney Knox, in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana. Born in 1842 in Belleville, Richland County, Ohio. Elizabeth J. died in Unknown.

On 26 Feb 1866 when John was 39, he third married Eliza Knox17, daughter of William Knox & Isabell Beatty,  Noble County, Indiana.18 Born on 25 Aug 1840 in Richland County, Ohio.17,13 Eliza died in Churubusco, Whitley County, Indiana, on 21 May 1922; she was 81.17,16
