1931 UK: Luncheon Honoring American Gift

On Wednesday, July 8th, 1931, the Mayor and the Corporation of Boston hosted a luncheon in honor of the visit of the American Ambassador and the Archbishop of Canterbury in recognition of the restoration of St. Botolph’s Church and the Presentation of the American Gift.

U.S. Ambassador Dawes

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom at the time was Charles G. Dawes, who has served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929 under President Calvin Coolidge. He was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom in July 1929 by newly elected President Herbert Hoover and served as ambassador until December 431, 1931.

At the time, the Archbishop of Canterbury was William Gordon Lang, 1st Baron of Lambeth, and the Bishop of Lincoln was William Swane. Rev. A.M. Cook, Vicar Designate represented St. Botolph’s Church and T.E. Dennis and W.R. Whiting represented the subscribers to the American Gift presented to St. Botolph’s Church for its restoration.
